Digitally printing large solid areas of colour
Designs with blocks of solid toner aren’t suited to the most textured stocks. The toner doesn’t fuse properly into all of the lumps and bumps of the card or paper. You might notice colour variance and banding throughout the print run. This is due to the printer struggling to maintain a constant temperature when fusing the large amount of toner onto the page.
If you’re uncertain of the results, we always recommend ordering a sample (samples not available for rigid signage or posters). A sample will give you a good indication of the results, just remember that digital colour will always have slight variations especially across larger print runs.
Smooth stocks produce the best results here's our top suggestions...
- For super smooth satin-feel stocks why not try Lakepaper Extra Pure, Marshmallow Crisp White 261gsm, Silk 350gsm or Knight Smooth 350gsm?
- Our metallic ranges Glamour Puss and Gmund Colours Metallic, produce great colour coverage with a shimmer because of the smooth, coated finish. Excellent results printing full colour with the added bonus of a slight shimmer to your design!
- For a slightly more textured stock try Lakepaper Extra Matt or Boston Classic White 350gsm. Boston is only suitable for single sided full colour printing due to the texture on one side.
Coco and Woodland card stocks have a lot of texture, and results will vary when printing solid areas of colour. Silk and Glamour Puss are very smooth and produce reliable printed results for designs with full colour..
Good to know Printery Tips!
Don't forget that paper and card stocks that are any colour other than white shades will affect the colour of everything in your design. So blue text on a pink stock might look more mauve than blue! We also can’t print lighter colours on dark stocks (see the related article below for more info.)
Very thin, small or pale text may not be legible especially on textured stocks. This is especially important on business cards and envelope addresses... you want them to be legible!

Rigid Signage and Posters
Large solid areas of colour on Rigid Signage (large format)
Our 3.8mm Eco Board for rigid signage has a beautiful, super smooth surface and satin finish – absolutely perfect for full colour printing on a big scale. Light reflects differently off this sort of cardstock. So colours may appear differently depending on where they’re used (vertically as a sign, compared to flat on a table as a menu for instance) and the lighting available.
