Supplying your design for print
Because business cards are small (and often with a lot of info) there's a few design rules to consider...
Size
- Our standard business card size is 90x55mm. Pricing is based on this size, so if you want cards that are different dimensions, there may be additional costs for trimming or die creation. Learn more.
Legibility and safe zones
- You want your cards to be memorable and a conversation starter, but you also need them to be legible!
- We highly recommend printing a sample (digital printing only) to check the size and positioning of your text and the overall design of your card.
- If your design will use letterpress, hot foil press or embossing you can print a digital sample 'mock up' of your design.
- Teeny-tiny email addresses and phone numbers may look more aesthetically pleasing but may be ineffective!
- All important text and graphics should be a MINIMUM 5mm from the edges, we recommend 8-10mm for double sided and/or double-thick (duplexed) designs that have digital printing due to the movement experienced with digital printing.
- We also don't recommend using lines or borders on your cards (minimum 8-10mm from the edge) as if the trimmed result is only 1mm off the eye can be drawn to this by lines and borders.
Combining specialist finishes (i.e letterpress) with digital printing
- Because we can experience up to 2mm movement in any direction with digital printing, please allow for this if your design combines digital with traditional techniques (letterpress, hot foil press or embossing). Tight registration or design elements that meet at specific points for example are not recommended.

Top BC Tips from the Printery Peeps
- See your business cards shimmering in Digital Gold, Silver and Metallic Colours (DGSM). They’re easy to set up and a great economic alternative to more expensive finishes.
- Use a different stock colour or texture on the reverse of your card by choosing double-thick (duplexed stocks).
- Remember that small type sizes means that digital text will work best on a smoother stock or in a darker colour.
- Add a die cut shape*! Choose from Peterkin’s selection of business card sized shapes, OR create your own custom die.
- *Remember to use our templates if you're using one of our standard die cut shapes to make sure your artwork is in the correct position.
- Check out our Artwork Guidelines, and other articles in this Help Centre for instructions on how to set up different combinations of print finishes.
